Wire treatment INFORM®

The use of thre cored wire treatments INFORM ® from ASK CHEMICALS, involves a large number of technical and economic advantages such as:

  • High homogeneity, due to accurate adjustment of conditions such as temperature and amount of iron.
  • Controlled vapour detachment during the treatment, which helps to clean the casting.
  • Ideal for setting the load of the treatment.
  • Easy to handle.

INFORM ® treatment wire is used in ladle. Coverage of the steel wire treatment dissolves in the molten iron and dust from the filler wire is released. Should be sought that the wire INFORM ® treatment dissolves more deeply into the iron melt, required depth could be achieved with adequate speed winding.

Inoculant in Grain

Inoculants in grain of ASK Chemicals are effective for both grey and nodular iron and are suitable for treatment in ladle and vein. They are manufactured from ferro silicon combined with different active elements that give them the most suitable characteristics for each case. Its contents in rare earths, zirconium, calcium, barium, manganese, strontium, aluminum, titanium, tin, magnesium, etc.. offer a very wide range of possibilities for iron foundries.

CSF 10

APPLICATION

CSF 10 is used as an inoculant for cast iron with lamellar graphite and cast iron with nodular graphite. When inoculating cast iron with lamellar graphite, an effective inoculation also occurs through the formation of cerium sulfides or oxides. When inoculating cast iron with nodular graphite, CSF 10 is also responsible for the neu- tralization of harmful trace elements, especially when working with FeSiMg alloys free of rare earths.

VP 116

APPLICATION

VP 116 is an in stream inoculant for the inoculation of cast iron with nodular graph- ite. This inoculant has been specially developed for molten metal treated with pure magnesium. This applies particularly to treatments in the GF converter or treat- ments with pure magnesium wire. The chemical analysis of the VP-116 takes into consideration the unique features of molten metal treated with pure magnesium. Because of the low sulfur and low oxygen content of such molten metal, a strong inoculation effect is needed, especially through a corresponding Al addition. The chill and carbide formation is also suppressed in rapidly solidifying wall thicknesses.

VP 216

APPLICATION

VP 216 is a ladle and in stream inoculant specially developed for the inoculation of cast iron with nodular graphite. The combination of the inoculation-effective ele- ments aluminum and calcium achieves not only a higher inoculation level at the moment of addition, but also significantly reduces the fading effect compared to other standard inoculants. VP 216 is readily soluble and suppresses the carbide formation (chill). Thanks to its strong inoculation effect, VP 216 also assists the formation of a ferritic matrix in thin walls. This leads to a considerable increased in the elongation with only slightly altered tensile strength.

SAW 304

APPLICATION

SAW 304 is a highly effective inoculation alloy based on ferrosilicon and is espe cially suitable far casi iron with nodular graphite. The combination of Al and Bi greatly increases the number of spheres, in conjunction with Ce. The content of rare earth metals is precisely coordinated to the composition in arder to counteract graphite degeneration. The diffusion paths far carbon are reduced by increasing the number of spheres, which allows increased ferrite contents to be achieved in the cast state.

Mold Inoculants

The use of cast, monolithic molds with definite analyses (Germalloy and Optigran) in the foundry has demonstrated for more than three decades that a quality improvement unattainable with any other product can be achieved as a result of the optimal inoculation effect. Inoculation in mold offers the following advantages:

  • The inoculation is coordinated fairly accurately to the casting mass
  • The dissolution of the inoculant occurs under air exclusion.
  • The mold inoculation increases the number of graphite spheres or promotes a fine A-graphite formation for GJL.
  • By raising the ferrite content is possible to develop GJS-400-15 or GJS-400-18 or GJS-400-18-LT or GJS-400-18-RT-cast state (thermal treatment processes could be saved)
  • The formation of segregations is counteracted.

Nodular Pre Alloy

The low-percentage magnesium pre-alloys are predominantly used in the overmolding method. The specified working conditions and operational requirements are decisive for the effective design of the treatment ladles and for the question of a cover for the pre-alloy filling. It can be advantageous to combine certain grain sizes and pre-alloy types. The grain size is to be coordinated to the claims of the treatment process, the treatment unit and the relevant operating conditions. Further application options are Mg treatment in the mold (see data sheet INMOLD Method) and the flow method.

Nodular Pre alloys

Aplication

Application

Low magnesium alloys are mainly used in the overpouring process. Depending on the working and operating conditions, the appropriate design of the treatment ladles and the alloy charge coverage is determined. It may be appropriate to combine certain particle sizes and alloy types. The alloy particle size should be matched to the requirements of the treatment process, the treatment unit and the operating conditions. Other possible uses are Mg treatment in the mold (see INMOLD process data sheet).

General conditions

The coagulation and precipitation of the reaction products that inevitably arise, especially in gas- and sulfur-rich smelters, are slow and imperfectly developed.

In case of high sulfur content in the base steel there is an increased risk of MgS inclusions and possible resulfuration.

If possible, the S content before Mg treatment should not exceed 0.02%. At S contents > 0.02%, LV 53 should be considered.

Storage and transport

Magnesium master alloys can be stored without restriction in their original packaging. Contact with moisture should be avoided. The regulations governing hazardous substances must be observed. For further information, please refer to our shipping section. Magnesium master alloys are classified as non-dangerous goods according to transport regulations.

Master Alloys

Nickel magnesium treatment alloys have been used since the industrial production of cast iron with nodular graphite for the metallurgical treatment of molten iron. The specifically heavy nickel is distinguished as a magnesium carrier by a) its segregation-free dissolving capacity for magnesium (NiMg 4) and b) its relatively resistant intermetallic phase with magnesium (NiMg 15). Nickel-magnesium alloys enable a simple and targeted introduction of magnesium in molten iron from a few 100 kg up to 100 t and more, with no need for special equipment. Nickel-magnesium treatment alloys are used both at low treatment temperatures (< 1400°C) and at high treatment temperatures > 1500°C. Nickel-magnesium treatment alloys with low C content have proven to be especially effective deoxidization and desulfurization agents in alloyed steels.

The use of this special copper containing treatment alloy can be effective under certain conditions for the production of Cu-alloyed cast iron with nodular graphite.

Molten Iron Cleaners

Dispersit® is a new method of metallurgical purification of molten iron. Dispersit® reduces the surface tension of the molten metal and assists the coagulation of foreign particles or reaction products, which can thus rise at an accelerated rate. In addition, Dispersit® reduces the formation of reaction product (slag) deposits on the treatment ladle, pouring ladle and pouring furnace lining. When using Dispersit ®, the addition of alloys containing Mg can be reduced during the production of cast iron with nodular graphite. For example, 1 kg Dispersit® is generally a substitute for 1 – 2 kg of a 5% FeSiMg alloy; there are corresponding empirical values when using other FeSiMg alloys. The use of Dispersit® is often successful in reducing the scrap rate caused by dross and inclusions by over 50%.

Preconditioning of Molten Metal

COMETAL offers the ASK Chemicals treatment agents for casting preconditioning before the Mg treatment. The addition of Cerium leads to the formation of Ce-O-S compounds that are stable under atmospheric conditions in the temperature range from 1450 to 1550°C. Ce-O-S compounds cannot be altered by atmospheric oxygen. Cerium oxysulfides are very fine (approx. 1 – 3 μm), round in shape and remain suspended in the molten metal owing to their high specific gravity (approx. 6.5 g/cm³). They boost the heterogeneous nucleation catalysis. The formation of dross is countered through the removal of oxygen and sulfur in the base iron by introducing cerium before the magnesium treatment.

If Cerium Mischmetall is not introduced with a pre-conditioning alloy, the use of cube-shaped pieces of cerium misch metal is suitable. Cerium misch metal is also used for modification of the graphite in the cast iron in order to achieve cast iron with vermicular graphite or compact graphite.

FeSiBa

APPLICATION

FeSiBa is a preconditioning agent for cast iron melts to be applied in the oven during tapping or transit in the ladle. This highly effective based on Ferro Silicon preconditioning agent can be used for both gray and nodular iron. Particularly barium element, together with aluminium and calcium, gives to the alloy a pre-inoculation effect which improves the melt conditions for its further processing which means less attenuation of the inoculation effect, minor tendency to hardening and, in short, it enhances the mechanical properties of the casting.

VL (Ce) 2

APPLICATION

VL (Ce) 2 is a treatment agent for the preconditioning of molten cast iron before magnesium treatment. The addition of cerium leads to the formation of Ce-O-S compounds that are stable under atmospheric conditions in the temperature range from 1450 to 1550°C, these compounds cannot be altered by atmos- pheric oxygen. % Ca 0,6 – 1,7
% Al 0,6 – 1,5
% Zr 2,0 – 3,0
% Mn 2,0 – 3,0
% Ce 1,8 – 2,2

ADDITION RATE

The material should be added directly before the magnesium treatment when tapping the molten iron into the pouring stream. The addition of VL (Ce) 2 is ori- ented both to the cerium requirement of the molten iron for neutralization of the so-called detrimental elements (e.g. Ti, Pb etc.) and the cerium requirement for binding the oxygen and sulfur to cerium oxysulfide. Depending on the properties of the base iron, addition rates of 0.1 to 0.3% by weight, have proven to be suffi- cient.
A treatment agent free of cerium or cerium misch metal is to be chosen for the magnesium treatment.

Steel Shots

COMETAL supplies high quality steel shot . The technology of cooling by water used to manufacture these grits allows the maximum possible temperature gradient between the furnace and the cooling process, thus represents a clear improvement over the conventional system of air cooling. Steel particles fall into water whose temperature and chemical composition are controlled, the temperature of the steel particles falls dramatically and this causes a strong metallurgical structure in the particle of the grit, wherein the carbon and iron atoms are arranged the most optimal and regular shape.

The fine metallurgical structure with homogeneous tempered martensite, gives each particle the highest possible resilience, extending its life in blasting situations, while still transmitting a high energy.

Shots, marketed by COMETAL, have an specific heat treatment process for each grade. This means that each tempering furnace, treats particles of the same size, and thus produces an accurate and thorough heat treatment, through each individual particle, which gives an optimum and consistent hardness. This contrasts sharply with other procedures to obtain grits in which particles of different sizesare processed simultaneously in the furnace.

Calzot

APPLICATION

Calzot® is used in iron metallurgy as a cost-effective agent for increasing the ni- trogen content. Different addition techniques are practiced here:

  • Addition when tapping in the ladle
  • Injection of Calzot® into the molten metal using the lance method or by insert- ing cored wire

When adding Calzot®, a total carbon content of approx. 22.5% must be consid- ered (Cfree + C from CN2), which is dissolved in the iron.

The nitrogen discharge depends on the iron quality, the amount introduced and the addition technique.

The following can apply as guide values:

  • 30 – 50% with addition of pails during tapping
  • 80 – 100% with injection, pneumatically or as cored wire
