COMETAL shares the concern that the trade of so-called “conflict minerals” from mining activities in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its neighboring countries (Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Angola and Tanzania), may be directly or indirectly financing armed groups involved in the civil war process in the DRC and resulting in serious social and environmental damage.
